Tools used: Figma, Unity, Photoshop
My Role: Primarily UX (design flow) and sound effects. I also contributed to key game concept contributions.
This small game was made from scratch in 48 hrs for the Game Maker's Toolkit 2023 Game Jam by a team of five, including myself.
Our team’s focus was on learning how to collaborate in making a playable game remotely. We had to come up with a working concept and a playable prototype in a short period of time that would then be judged by the contest curator.
“Sacrifice your friends to save the others: it's a twisted cycle with only one way out. Are you willing to pay the price of survival?”
Snak is a single player PC game, where the player is one of the eggs being chased down by the snake. This is a horror perspective-twist on the classic Snake game (popularized by early Nokia phones)
Learnt to use Unity (Game Engine)
Applied my game knowledge to UX
Team collaboration went exceptionally well
User reactions were favorable
Having only 48h was stressful
Limited time meant that some bugs weren’t fixed in time by release
Nokia Snake: The inspiration for the game and UI
The menu flow was inspired by Nokia Snake (1997) and other classic arcade games (main menu, pause and victory/defeat screens). Due to the limited time for this project, my focus was on making only the essential UI screens.
Using my flow as a base, the UI artist made assets and implemented screens in Unity. I helped her by adding buttons, creating additional icons and editing the screens in Unity.
I also worked on recording sounds and adding them to the UI and the game to give gameplay feedback.
Players generally seemed to enjoy our game, appreciating the atmospheric experience and immersive audio. Some players unfortunately had issues with mouse sensitivity and volume. While these issues were fixed by us in a later patch, they were not found in time for the contest release, leading to lower ratings and rankings.
Our team worked well together and performed under the stressful crunch of the jam. It was an enjoyable experience and taught me a lot about game development and project management. We already have plans to join future jams as a team in order to keep building our skills.
